Keiji Doi was born in Chiba, Japan. Around mid-1990s, he started to exhibit his works which were monochrome gelatin silver prints of nature, cityscapes, still life, etc., photographed with his large format cameras. In 2010s, he introduced his prints using one of alternative photographic processes; carbon print. Then, he introduced PhotoCeramic; an original technique that combines carbon print and ceramic art. Recently, he has been creating his works using oil print process, which was part of the Pictorialism trend that began at the end of the 19th century.

About the PhotoCeramic:

The PhotoCeramic is a newly developed method of expression in photography where a Western alternative photographic process and Japanese traditional ceramic art have been fused. First, by using carbon print, invented in the mid 19th century in France, an image on film or a digital negative is exposed, developed and transferred to surface of a white ceramic plate. Second, the transferred image on the ceramic plate is fired at 850C degrees.

The material forming the image is a Japanese ceramic art paint named Uwa-Enogu or overglaze paint which is encapsulated within the glazed surface of the ceramic plate by firing. This is the same glazing material used in IMARI (ARITA), a traditional porcelain produced in the 17th century. Thus formed images are expected to survive for several hundred years without deterioration.

土居慶司（どいけいじ）：千葉県生まれ。1990年代半ば頃から、大判カメラで撮影した、自然、都市風景、静物などを題材としたモノクローム銀塩プリント作品の展示を始める。2010年代からは、古典写真技法のひとつであるカーボンプリン、カーボンプリントと陶芸を組み合わせたオリジナル技法であるフォトセラミック作品を発表している。最近では、19世紀末に始まったピクトリアリズム（絵画主義）の潮流の一つである、オイルプリント技法による作品制作を行っている。

フォトセラミックとは：
フォトセラミックとは、西欧の写真古典技法と、日本の伝統的陶芸を融合した、新たなる写真の表現方法である。まず、19世紀半ば、フランスで発明されたカーボンプリント技法を用いて、フィルム、または、デイジタル・ネガ上の画像を、白色のセラミックプレート表面に転写する。そして、この画像が転写されたセラミックプレートは約850度で焼成される。

画像を形成する素材には、日本の陶芸用の上絵具を用いており、焼成することで、17世紀に作られた伊万里焼（有田焼）など、伝統的な絵付け磁器と同様、セラミックプレート表面のガラス質に封じ込められる。従って、形成された画像は、数百年以上、劣化することなく存続するものと推定される。
